1912 yılında Lincolnshire, İngiltere'de doğan Michael Francis Gilbert, Sussex kolejinde eğitim gördükten sonra Londra Üniversitesi'ne devam etti. Londra'da avukatlık yaptığı sırada tanıştığı Raymond Chandler'ın teşvikiyle polisiye türünden yazmaya başladı. British Crime Writers Association kurucularından olan Gilbert, 1988 yılında Mystery Writers of America tarafından verilen "Edgar, Grand Master" ödülüyle onurlandırıldı. Aynı zamanda yaşam boyu hizmetleri için 1990 Boucheron Londra Kongresinde "Anthony" ödülünü kazandı. Polisiye edebiyatının büyük isimlerinden olan Gilbert, 1980 yılında "Commander in the Order of the British Empire" şovalye ünvanına layık görüldü.
