Julian Rathbone 10 Şubat 1935, Blackheath, Londra doğumludur. Cambridge Üniversitesi'nden mezun olduktan sonra İngilizce öğretmenliği yaptı. Altmişlı yıllarda Türkiye'de üç yıl öğretmenlik mesleğini sürdürdü. Bu süre içerisinde yaptığı gözlemleri birkaç polisiye romanında aktarmıştır. İki kere "Booker Prize"a aday gösterilmiştir.
