Lawrence Block, 24 Haziran 1938 tarihinde Buffalo-New York'ta doğdu. Ohio'daki Kolej döneminden sonra 1960 yılında ilk evliliğini yaptı. 1973 yılında ayrıldığı eşi Loretta'dan üç kızı var. Block aynı zamanda William Ard, Jill Emerson, Chip Harrison, Paul Kavanaugh, Sheldon Lord ve Andrew Shaw adları altında eserler vermiştir. Kariyerine pornografik romanlarla başladı. En önemli kahramanları artık içmeyen alkolik bir özel dedektif olan Matt Scudder, New York'lu bir hırsız ve kitapçı olan Bernie Rhodenbarr ve ABD'li bir ajan olan Evan Tanner'dir. Block bugün 1983 yılında evlendiği ikinci eşi ile Greenwich Village, New York'ta yaşıyor.
