Charles Franklin, Frank Hugh Usher'ın takma adı,  Leicester, Leicestershire doğumlu İngiliz suç ve casus romanları yazarı. Frank Usher ve Frank Lester takma adlarıyla da yazmıştır. Savaş sonrası dönemde İngiltere'de hâlâ revaçta olan kim-yaptı (whodunit) romanlarına pek ilgi duymayan yazar, Peter Cheyney ve David Hume'un izinden giderek kara romana ve daha az şaşırtıcı bir şekilde 1960'lardan itibaren casus romanlarına yöneldi.

 

Charles Franklin takma adıyla 1946'da ilk romanı Exit Without Permit'i (İzinsiz Çıkış) yayınladı ve en ünlü kahramanı, on iki soruşturmasında bazen çekici sekreteri Barbara Wenthworth tarafından yardım edilen genç ve gözü pek bir avukat olan Grant Garfield'dı. Garfield'ı terk ettikten sonra, Müfettiş Jim Burgess için üç roman ve bir tür kadın James Bond olan casus Maxine Dangerfield için üç roman daha yazdı. Ayrıca Charles Franklin adıyla ünlü hukuk ve ceza davalarını konu alan tarihi eserler de yayımladı.

 

Gerçek adıyla, bir portre ressamı ve amatör hafiye olan Daye Smith'in maceralarını yazdı. Bu adı ayrıca fantastik kısa öyküleri ve Amanda Curzon ile yardımcısı Oscar Sallis ikilisini merkeze alan kısa bir casus romanları dizisi için de kullandı.
