29 Ekim 1906'da Cincinnati'de doğdu. Bilimkurgu ve detektif romanları türünü çok iyi harmanlayan yazarın, masraflarını karşılayabilmek için kısa bir süre içinde yazdığı birçok hikaye ve romanı bulunmaktadır. Sonunda büyük sürprizler bulunan ironik kısa bilimkurgu öyküleri ile meşhurdur. Her ne kadar yaşadığı dönem içerisinde değeri pek fazla bilinmemişse de Bilimkurgu ve Polisiye edebiyatının kült isimlerindendir.
