Rex Stout 1 Aralık 1886 tarihinde Noblesville, Indiana'da dünyaya geldi. Erkenden okumaya başlayan Rex, matematik kavrayışı açısından dahi çocuk olarak nitelendirildi. 19 yaşındayken muhasebeci olarak çalışmaya başladı. 23 yaş ile bir oteli yönetiyordu ve 26 yaşındayken başarılı bir yazardı. Rivayete göre 30 değişik işte faaliyet gösterdi. Kendi keşfettiği bir bankacılık sistemi ile çok para kazanan Rex, bu gelir sayesinde uzun yolculuklar yaptı. 1932 yılında polisiye kitapları yazmaya başladı. Başkahramanı neredeyse her zaman şişman bir gurme ve orkide yetiştiricisi olan "Nero Wolf" idi. Aynı zamanda hareket tembeli olan Nero, tüm ayak işleri için yardımcısı Archie Goodwin'e sahipti. 1959 yılında Grandmaster ödülünü alan Rex Stout 27 Ekim 1975 tarihinde vefat etti.
