Malden, Massachusetts'te doğan Erle Stanley Gardner on yaşındayken Portland'e taşındı ve 1909 yılında okulu bitirip Hukuk eğitimine başladı. Indiana'daki Valparaiso University'den yumruklu bir kavgadan dolayı atılan Gardner, daha sonra da yasal olmayan boks müsabakalarında boy gösterdi. Bir Hukuk şirketinde çalışmaya başlayan Gardner, 1910 yılında Kaliforniya'da kendi bürosunu açtı. 1911-1918'de Oxnard'da avukat olarak çalışan Gardner'in gelirinin çoğu Çinli vatandaşlardan kazanmıştır. Bir ara satıcı olarak çalıştıysa da 1933 yılına kadar avukatlık yapmaya devam etmiştir. 1921 yılında Natalie Frances Talbert ile evlenir. 1948 yılında haksız olarak mahkum edilmiş olabilecek şahıslara yardımcı olan ve "Court of Last Resort" adını taşıyan bir dernek kurar. 20'li yıllarda Gardner western ve polisiye romanlar yazmaya başlar. A.A. Fair, Carleton Kendrake und Charles J. Kenny takma adlarıyla çok sayıda hikaye yayınlamıştır. Her üç günde bir, bir kısa hikaye yazmayı kendine hedef koymuş ve bu hedefi de büyük ölçüde yerine getirmiştir. 1932 yılından itibaren Diktaphon (bir tür kayıt cihazı) kullanarak, hikayelerini daha da hızlı yazabilmiştir. 1933 yılında avukat Perry Mason kahramanının geçtiği ilk romanını yazar. Aynı karakter ile toplam 82 roman ve üç kısa hikaye yayınlanmıştır. Oldukça şaşalı bir yaşam süren Gardner, daha fazla para kazanabilmek için A.A. Fair takma adıyla yeni bir seriye başlar. Bu serinin baş karakterleri Bertha Cool ve Donald Lam'dır. Başarılı bulunan bu serini 1939-1970 yılları arasında 29 roman yayınlanmıştır. 1962 yılında Grandmaster ödülünü alan Gardner, 1968 yılında sekreteri olan Agnes J. Bethell ile ikinci evliliğini yapar ve 11 Mart 1970'te Kaliforniya'da vefat eder.
